Nearly 1 in 3 Australian men hope to marry a virgin, according to a poll conducted by men’s magazine FHM.
But what are the chances of meeting a woman who hasn’t yet tasted the pleasures of the flesh?
These virgin-hunting men may not be in luck, as roughly 9 in 10 Australian women (aged 16 to 35) have had multiple sexual relationships, according to the 2005 Australian Longitudinal Study of Health and Relationships.
Men may simply have to accept the reality of the fact that their future wife will have had sexual partners before them.
As more and more Australians marry at later ages, their sexual experience will increase proportionately. It is now rare for Australians to marry before the age of 25, with men marrying for the first time when they’re about 29 years of age, and women marrying for the first time at roughly age 27.
So how many sexual partners can a woman in her late twenties be expected to have?
We know that most Australian women between the ages of 30 and 39 have had an average of 4.7 sexual partners. (Men in that age range have had an average of 9.5 sexual partners.)
And that’s great news for about half of Australian men in the FHM poll, who set their sights a bit lower. These men didn’t expect to marry a virgin, but they did hope for a bride who’d had five sexual partners or less.
